Hot Stones massage

Hot stone therapy goes beyond the physical experience of

typical massage. It eases pain and stress, melts away tension,

eases muscle stiffness, increases circulation and metabolism and

enters deeper dimensions of relaxation, health and well-being.

What is Hot Stone Therapy?

Hot Stone Therapy originated in Tuscan Arizona in 1993 by Mary Hannigan. It is now one of the fastest growing massage techniques of today. The use of hot stones is not however a new concept. The Chinese, Japanese and Indians have all used stones for ritual and healing over thousands of years.

Water heated, smooth basalt lava stones are used as well as traditional massage and Aromatherapy oils. Stones from volcanic origins are effective due to their thermal and energy conductive qualities.

The therapist will use the stone to massage with, they can also be laid out on the couch for the client to lie on, placed on the body or given to hold, there are also small stones that can be placed between the toes. Warm stones glide over the skin and warmth radiates through the body. A deeper massage can be achieved with the stones as one massage stroke with the stone is equivalent to 5-10 with the hand.

Stone Therapy is an effective form of healing stimulating the body’s self healing processes.

...."I absolutely loved the hot stone massage. I found the warmth of the stones really relaxing and comforting – especially on my arthritic knee. I can imagine that if you suffer from aches and pains but aren’t up for a deep massage, the stones would be the perfect answer. I was worried about what the stones would feel like , but theyare very smooth and  it doesn’t feel like stone at all, just an all-encompassing warmth taking over your body..pure bliss. ".....

What To Expect

Hot stone massage is received laying down on a massage couch.

You will be made to feel comfortable and then the massage may begin.

I  will gently glide the hot stones over your body. As the stones cool, I will select another hot stone to use until your muscles are completely relaxed You may not even notice that you are being massaged with stones, you will experience a wonderfuly comforting warmth. Once the stone becomes a little cooler , the warm oiled stones are then  placed on multiple acupressure points around your body, perhaps even tiny ones between your toes. You may drift off into a dreamy state and lose track of where the hot stones are arranged as your body sinks further into a state of relaxation,

Hot stone massage employs a variety of strokes and techniques using the stones and hands, working over kinks in your muscles. You are unlikely to feel the intensity, since your muscles will be relaxed by the heat of the stones. Your therapist may alternate between hot basalt stones and much colder, marble stones, usually on the face.

Hot stone massage should trigger a deeply relaxed, blissed-out and meditative state. Some people have reported closing their eyes and seeing bright colours

Hot stone massage is a wonderful treat, so indulge as much as you can.  . It's not a good idea to eat a heavy meal or drink alcohol in the hours beforehand.

Your hot stones treatment is likely to last at least an hour, plenty of time for melting away all your knots, aches and worries.

Don't be afraid to tell me if the stones are too warm for you. You'll relax much more quickly and start enjoying that delicious feeling of total well-being if you're comfortable.

We recommend you should book hot stone treatments on a day when you won't have to rush out somewhere afterwards. You'll feel so relaxed and soothed after your treatment, jumping in the car and tackling the rush hour traffic might seem sacrilegious

Aftercare Advice

Following a Hot stone massage you should dress yourself slowly and have a drink of water. Once you are home you should rest for a minimum period of 30 minutes to an hour, you should drink plenty of water ideally 1.5 to 2 litres during the rest of the day.

Following the treatment there may be some reddening of the skin, this is a perfectly normal reaction due to increased blood flow, an increase in urination is also perfectly normal as the body is releasing toxins that require to be discharged this is a perfectly natural reaction to the increased blood in the skin.
