Traditional Reproductive Healing

Mizan Therapy logo

Do you suffer from menstrual pain or discomfort? Does your monthly cycle take you on an emotional rollercoaster? Is it difficult to have a smear test? Are you struggling with fertility issues? Do you have PCOS? Do you have digestive problems, or IBS?

Are your menopausal symptoms taking over your life ? Have you had any abdominal surgery, including caesarean section?

Are you pregnant or just had a baby?

Mizan Therapy can help with any of these – and many more!

Mizan uses traditional healing techniques to address conditions involving reproductive organs, the digestive system and emotional health. These techniques are commonly used in India and further east for optimising women’s health. It is a gentle, external massage that brings healing to the womb space and optimum health and well-being to women on both physical and emotional levels

What Is Mizan Therapy?

Mizan (pronounced like Milan) is an Arabic word that means balance. By using traditional reproductive healing techniques, Mizan Therapists seek to restore balance when life feels unbalanced – physically, emotionally or spiritually.

Mizan Therapy is a form of traditional reproductive healing. Most traditional medicine systems use abdominal massage, for both men and women.

Mizan Therapy is a gentle but effective way of massaging the abdomen that improves the flow of circulatory fluids of the blood, lymph and nervous systems to strengthen the muscles and ligaments that hold the internal organs in their optimum positions.

Mizan Therapy relieves congestion and helps to remove blockages to stimulate physical and emotional health and well-being.

It improves the health of the reproductive systems for both men and women, as well as benefitting the digestive system.

How does Mizan Therapy help women?

The uterus is held in place by muscles and ligaments that can become contracted or over-stretched, allowing the womb to move out of her optimum position.

This can lead to many varied symptoms.

MAT strengthens the ligaments, allowing them to heal and as they do so, guiding the uterus back into her centre.

What causes the womb to move out of position?

There are many causes, sometimes we know the reasons, sometimes not, but MAT can be effective even if we don’t know the answer to that question.

Here are some of the main causes:

High impact exercise, particularly running on cement surfaces, gymnastics, trampolining.

A modern lack of understanding of the needs of women, particularly during menstruation, pregnancy, childbirth and post natally. This can lead to weakening of the pelvic ligaments and muscles, weak pelvic floor muscles, over-stretched or over-contracted ligaments in the pelvis

Falls to the sacrum and lower back, car accidents, blows to the head.

Previous abdominal surgery

Chronic muscle spasm on the lower back and sacrum.

Time, age, gravity.

Emotional trauma.

How do I know if my uterus is tilted?

The main indicators are symptoms.

Here are some of the main ones:

Painful menstruation

Irregular menstruation

Painful ovulation

Dark blood at the beginning or end of menstruation

Fatigue during ovulation or menstruation

Endometriosis

Fibroids

Polyps

Fertility problems

Chronic miscarriages

Difficult pregnancy and birth

Headaches/migraines with menstruation

Low back ache with menstruation

Pre-menstrual tension and depression

Frequent urination, bladder infections, urge incontinence

Chronic constipation

Frequent vaginal infections

Menopausal symptoms

Will Mizan Therapy improve fertility?

It has been known that many women who have been unable to conceive do so successfully following treatments while others have gone on to become pregnant following IVF where they hadn’t before. Obviously there is no guarantee that you will become pregnant following MAT, but the medical professionals are also unable to offer guarantees of successful pregnancy.

During sessions you will receive massage, diet and lifestyle recommendations and often herbal remedies, all of which together help to enhance fertility.

Men can also benefit from treatments – it has been found to increase the quantity and quality of sperm.

I no longer have a womb;
will Mizan Therapy still be helpful to me?

All surgery leaves scars – either physical scar tissue or emotional scars. By improving the circulation around the pelvis and lower abdomen, scar tissue can be prevented from forming, or broken down.

Your womb may longer be physically with you, but her spirit lives on, and MAT can help you to rebuild your connection with your wombspace and increase your sense of health and well-being.

What are the benefits of Mizan Therapy during pregnancy?

If your uterus is not in her optimum position, it is harder for the baby to line up in the best position for birth. A perfectly aligned baby will mean a faster, easier birth – with all of the labour focused on birthing the baby, rather than a long pre-labour where your body is trying to re-position the baby.

MAT during pregnancy tones and strengthens the uterus and helps the ligaments to support her and the growing baby. Pregnancy massage ensures a good blood circulation to both the uterus and the baby and, along with the self-care pregnancy massage, helps mama and baby to connect in the months before birth.

Will Mizan Therapy help after the birth?

Yes! During pregnancy, the ligaments that support your uterus are under a lot of stress and are stretched to their extreme. Post birth you want to ensure that your womb contracts and realigns well and that the supporting ligaments relax equally.

Post birth your Mizan Therapist may have other resources for supporting your recovery with healing and warming oils, vaginal steams and abdominal binding – or a closing the bones ceremony

What if I had a caesarean section?

If you had a caesarean section there will be scar tissue. MAT will help to prevent the formation and even break down old scar tissue. Scar tissue can cause the pelvic organs to stick together, so preventing this will be more comfortable as well as make future pregnancies easier

Is Mizan Therapy beneficial for men?

Mizan Abdominal Therapy is administered in the same way to men as women. Men may not have a uterus but they can still benefit in several ways.

It helps with the prostate, for instance, congestion can result in benign prostatic hypertrophy

It can help with impotence, sperm mobility and quantity

Helps with digestive problems (see the question about how MAT helps with digestion)

Helps with muscles tightened by tension and suppressed emotion

How does Mizan Therapy help with digestive problems?

Our language is full of expressions that connect our emotions and our digestion. Have you ever had “butterflies” in your stomach? A “lump” in your throat? Have you ever been moved by a strong and undeniable “gut feeling” about something or someone?

We store our anxieties and emotions in our bodies and a popular storage area is the abdomen, and the digestive system. This can lead to constipation, indigestion, heartburn and even to IBS.

MAT, combined with self-care and dietary and lifestyle changes can make a huge difference to digestive upsets. And when our digestive system is working properly, we feel so much better.

Is there anyone who shouldn’t have Mizan Therapy?

Nearly every woman, whether your womb is still with you or not, feels the benefits from Mizan Abdominal Therapy. The improved circulation, lymphatic drainage and renewed movement of energy brings relaxation, healing and a renewed sense of well-being.

Contra Indications

Contra-indications to MAT over the lower abdomen.

Treatment can not take place over the lower abdomen  during the following times:

During menstruation

During the first trimester of pregnancy

Within the first six weeks of birth, or three months following a caesarean section (however, there is still some good work to be done for healing and recovery during this time).

If you have an IUD fitted

If cancer is present anywhere in the pelvis

How many sessions will I need?

Expect a minimum of three sessions. Many simple problems will be fixed after this, particularly if you do the self-care at home regularly. More complex cases may need many months.

We need to work together to re-align the uterus and also for the ligaments to become strong enough to hold her in place.

Regular attention to self-care speeds the healing process, and many women report a rapid improvement in health and well-being.

self-care massage. How long will it take?

All Mizan Therapists will teach you a simple self-care routine to do between appointments. It takes about five minutes a day, and can be done once you’re settled down in bed and ready for sleep – a lovely way to end the day, check in and do a bit of self-nurturing.

Healing with castor oil applied externaly

Castor oil has been used therapeutically for centuries in the medicine of Egypt, India, China, Greece, Rome and Africa, traditionally as a laxative but has become known more recently in the form of external packs.

I use castor oil packs a lot in my practice as a Mizan Practitioner. They are an excellent tool for breast cysts, fibroids, ovarian cysts, congestion of abdominal organs, skin conditions, small benign cysts, and adhesions from surgery. Wherever there is congestion, scar tissue, decreased blood flow and need for healing, castor oil can be an effective treatment option.

You can buy castor oil packs from myself if we feel that they will be beneficial to your self care treatments. I only use organic Castor oil and natural fibres.

You will be given full instructions of how and when to apply the castor oil packs in your consultation and also how to store and look aftrer your castor oil.

Womb Wrapping ~ Introducing the faja

Why you should wrap your womb

Whatever you call it – womb wrapping, belly binding, the faja (Spanish for belt, or girdle), supporting the womb by tying a piece of fabric around the lower abdomen is a great way to support womb healing.

The womb in her correct position should sit centrally in the pelvis, leaning forwards over the bladder and is held in place by sets of muscles and ligaments. Often, because of our lifestyle and activities, these supporting structures become compromised, either overstretched or contracted and our womb becomes tilted.

Common positions are to the left or right, backwards towards the sacrum, prolapse into the vagina, and any of these positions can cause a myriad of problems for women, largely unrecognised by the medical profession.

When the womb is correctly aligned and supported, women experience greater physical and emotional balance. A womb not in her correct position can be the starting point for a variety of symptoms from painful menstruation, hormonal disturbances, fertility issues, pregnancy problems, menopausal symptoms – the list is almost endless.

Womb wrapping, to complement massage by a Mizan practitioner, is an important self care tool. It is best to use a light but strong piece of cloth about 3 metres long. If you have a fuller figure, you may need a longer cloth. The width should be about 25 cm. Lightweight calico is a good option, and the natural off-white colour is a good basis for decorating it; fabric paints, dyes, tie-dye – go on, express yourself.

What you’re doing by womb wrapping, is holding the womb’s supporting muscles and ligaments; no longer the sole supporters of the womb, they can go into healing mode – you’re giving them a bit of a holiday, some time off to repair themselves.

..... " I have been having Menstrual problems ever since the birth of my 1st child.  My period returned at it was heavy, painful, I felt very tearful and also quite angry in the run up to my menstruation.  I began having Mizan Treatments and realised that my uterus wasn't in its correct position and was causing all of these upsets.

After only a few treatments along with the self massaging and castor oil packs I noticed a huge difference.   I now have my normal and healthy cycle back. Thanks Mizan"....
